For many of us, the first physically challenging thing we learn to do is ride a bike without training wheels. Don't we all remember? A running start. The safety hand that was attached to the bicycle seat is taken off. Then, "ZOOM!" the child is off and riding, and a lifetime of freedom and adventure awaits on a series of favorite two-wheeled vehicles.
Let's take a closer look at World Bicycle Day on June 3 to remember that first trip.
On June 3, World Bicycle Day, you can ride your worries away, whether you have training wheels or a tandem.
Almost all of us have to get our first bike and learn how to ride it as a rite of passage. Even though we got bruises and scabs when we fell off our bikes while learning, it is a memory we will always love. Bicycling is a very useful activity. In today's busy world, we can use it to get our muscles in shape and save money on gas because it's a popular alternative to driving a car and feeling the wind in our hair. Really, riding a bike is the most exciting thing I've ever done.
World Bicycle Day celebrates this and the fact that bikes last a long time. Bicycling is a simple and environmentally friendly way to get around. It is also good for our physical and mental health, the economy, and the environment.
World Bicycle Day was made by the United Nations for many reasons. Even though it is a simple thing, the bicycle has had a big impact on society. It gives even the poorest people access to basic transportation.
We're sure that once you start exploring your city or town by bike, it will look very different, no matter where you are in the world. In many cities, there are bike lanes that you can use to ride at your own pace. And many bikers love to get out of town to enjoy the wide views and wind in their hair that come with riding in the country.
Dr. Bernhard Ensink, Secretary-General of the European Cyclists' Federation, said of the United Nations' decision to make June 3 World Bicycle Day, "Cycling is a source of social, economic, and environmental benefits, and it brings people together."
The United Nations General Assembly made World Bicycle Day official in April 2018. Spread the word about this really cool party.
